  Disappointing handling of a simple late check-out request

  Overall, we enjoyed our stay at Riu Playa Park, but unfortunately the way our late check-out request was handled left a very disappointing final impression. We stayed at Riu Playa Park for five consecutive nights under two separate reservations four nights followed by an additional night. On 30 August we were moving directly to the neighbouring Riu Bravo, where we had another four-night RIU reservation. We asked reception for only one additional hour in our room, until 13:00 instead of 12:00, simply to bridge the short gap before moving to the next RIU hotel. We had also mentioned this request at reception the previous day and were not told at that time that it would be impossible. On the morning of departure, however, the request was refused because we were told that Riu Playa Park was completely full and that there were no available rooms. What made this explanation difficult to accept was that the official RIU booking system continued to show Riu Playa Park available for a new reservation for 30-31 August throughout the day. I personally showed this availability to the reception staff, but was told that it was supposedly an error in the application. We checked again several times during the day - in the morning, around 13:00 and again later in the afternoon -and Riu Playa Park continued to be available for booking. At the same time, other RIU hotels in the same search which genuinely had no availability were clearly marked by the RIU system as having no rooms available. This makes the explanation that the RIU booking system was simply showing incorrect availability particularly difficult to understand. We fully understand that late check-out is subject to availability and cannot always be guaranteed. The main issue is not simply that our request was refused, but the lack of flexibility and the contradictory explanation given to us. Considering that we had already stayed five nights at Riu Playa Park, are RIU Class members, and were immediately continuing our stay for another four nights at Riu Bravo, we expected a little more customer-oriented service for such a modest request of just one additional hour. Unfortunately, the attitude at reception in this situation did not feel particularly loyal or accommodating towards returning RIU guests. It was a disappointing end to an otherwise enjoyable stay.

  Disappointing due to overcrowding

  We had a nice holiday in Mallorca, but unfortunately the hotel itself was a disappointment. The hotel is far too overcrowded for the facilities available, especially around the pool area. The three relatively small pools are surrounded by rows and rows of sun loungers packed tightly together, almost as if the goal is simply to fit as many people as possible. Finding two loungers together during busy periods was difficult, and despite the hotel's policy, many were reserved with towels without staff doing anything about it. The facilities for young children were also very disappointing. There was hardly anything for them to do, and the small play area that was available consisted of a basic plastic slide on very hard tiles, which felt genuinely unsafe. Considering how many families with young children stay here, this could be much better. The food was another weak point: greasy, often dry, and with very little variety. Even the themed restaurant offered only minor changes rather than something noticeably different. On the positive side, our room was spacious and clean. The staff were perfectly fine as well. Overall, the hotel simply feels overcapacity, with too many guests for the space and facilities available. The holiday itself was enjoyable, but mainly because of Mallorca and what we did outside the hotel, rather than because of the hotel experience.

  Nice stay with some faults

  I am writing this review regarding my stay at Riu Playa Park from the 16th to the 23rd of August 2026. Before I start, I would like to say that my family and I are extremely grateful to be in the fortunate position of being able to go on holidays as premium as this. To start on a positive note, the highlight of our stay was the kind, attentive and courteous staff. They were truly legendary and deserve a great deal of praise. The hotel itself was also pristine. We were extremely impressed with how well maintained it was and how clean everything was kept. The food was lovely, with an extensive variety available every night. There was something for everyone, and they always seemed to accommodate different tastes, even those of extremely picky eaters. Travelling as a British family, we were conscious of some previous reviews describing the German crowd as “rowdy”. However, we did not find this to be a problem during our stay. As you enter the hotel, it is located on a German party strip, which did get fairly loud and extremely dirty at times. However, this is to be expected on any busy strip of bars, and every morning there was a cleaning crew who did a fantastic job of making the area as clean as possible again. It is also a popular destination for what appeared to be German hen and stag parties, which may deter some people depending on your personality and what you are looking for from your holiday. During our stay, we would estimate that around 80% of the guests were German, while only around 2–5% appeared to be English. Therefore, if you enjoy chatting with and meeting lots of people from your own country, I would not necessarily say this is the place for you. Once again, though, we personally did not see this as a problem. Moving on to the more negative aspects, the pool was very small. This meant there was very little room for floats, swimming or younger children to play. Therefore, we would not recommend this hotel for families travelling with younger children, as the pool is much more suited to sitting and relaxing rather than having fun and swimming around. Our main issue, which initially seemed like a small thing but became increasingly annoying, was the lack of bottled water. There were no water bottles provided in the rooms or at the bars. Instead, there were water machines where you could fill a small glass of water or purchase a reusable bottle to refill throughout your stay. We understand why the hotel has adopted this system from a sustainability perspective, but we would have appreciated knowing about it beforehand rather than having to go out and purchase bottles of water ourselves. There were also a few smaller issues with our room. The bathroom had a motion-activated light that was triggered by walking past it or opening the door. Furthermore, the bathroom wall consisted of translucent glass, meaning that when someone went to the bathroom during the night, the light illuminated a large part of the bedroom. The only way to prevent this was to remove the key card from the power slot, which then cut the electricity to the room and prevented devices from charging. Having stayed in several five-star hotels previously, we chose to stay in a four-star hotel this time and therefore understood that there would be some differences. While none of these individual issues were major, they were the sort of small details that gradually added up and made it clear that this is a four-star rather than a five-star experience. Overall, we genuinely enjoyed our stay at Riu Playa Park. The staff, cleanliness and quality of the food were definite highlights, and we left with many positive memories from the holiday. However, there are a few areas that we feel could be improved, particularly the size of the pool, the water system and some of the room design. For us, Riu Playa Park is best suited to couples, adults or families with older children who are looking for a clean, well-maintained hotel in a lively location and who do not mind being surrounded by a predominantly German crowd. While it was not perfect, we had a very enjoyable holiday and would like to thank the staff for making our stay such a pleasant one.

  Great hotel, thank you!

  We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Riu Playa Park between 22nd and 26th August 2026. The hotel was incredibly clean, and it was obvious that the staff worked exceptionally hard to keep everything running smoothly.A special mention must go to the lovely lady who checked us in (I am so sorry I didn't get her name!). Every time she saw us around the hotel, she made an effort to have a friendly conversation with us and made us feel so welcome. We also want to thank the housekeeper for room 4067—our room was lovely, kept absolutely spotless, and beautifully maintained throughout our trip.The food at the hotel was also lovely and delicious with plenty of variety. We also really enjoyed the evening entertainment, especially the Michael Jackson tribute show which was excellent. As a side note for fellow travellers, the hotel guests are predominantly German, but being English, we found absolutely everyone to be incredibly friendly and polite.The location is fantastic. We were very close to the Bierkönig and Bamboleo bars, but we always felt completely safe walking through the streets on our way to and from the beach, which is a convenient 2-minute walk from the hotel.We had a brilliant holiday and would highly recommend this hotel!

  A lovely hotel, but the offer isn't really 24-hour all-inclusive

  There are five Riu hotels near the Playa del Palma and this is possibly the furthest away from the beach, which is about 5-7 minutes’ walk away down a busy and narrow road lined with Spar stores and large drinking establishments, predominately of the sports bar / bierkeller variety. Having said that, once inside the hotel things are calm, clean and organised and the staff are lovely and helpful. The hotel rooms are on five floors and surround a pool area, which felt crowded (the hotel was full), but there were always sunbeds available and the pool staff were great at assisting where necessary to find space. There was enough shade even for the very hot days. The food in the main restaurant was excellent and varied, including some show cooking. We didn’t go to the specialty restaurant, which alternated between different cuisines and didn’t need to be booked. Pepe’s Food, the snack bar at the far end of the pool area was also good – with more variety and of a higher standard than at other Riu hotels we have visited. Our daughter is vegetarian and there was always something she wanted to eat. The room itself was very clean, with lovely modern décor. Our view was towards the inside of the hotel – ie. across the pool to the block at the other side – and because we were on the top floor we could see the mountains beyond. We could also see the airport over the top of the buildings and watched planes lining up to land from our balcony overnight. This wasn’t particularly noisy and we enjoyed seeing the stream of planes. One slightly odd thing about the room design is that there’s an opaque window between the bathroom and the bedroom area. Also the bathroom has a movement sensitive light. This meant that it was impossible to go to the toilet during the night without the light going on and lighting up (to some extent) the whole space. Contrary to other reviews I have seen, there was no noise at all during the night. Perhaps that’s because we asked for a high and quiet room. There was also very good air-conditioning in the room, which was particularly welcome on really hot days and nights. This hotel advertises itself as 24-hour all-inclusive, but the offer isn’t what I’ve come to expect from visits to other Riu hotels across three different continents in recent years. • Pool towels – these aren’t automatically offered – you can borrow towels if you are able to leave a deposit of 10 euros per towel • Water in rooms – apparently local laws prevent the hotel from providing bottled water for environmental reasons. Rather than supplying a reusable bottle (perhaps for a deposit, following the logic of the pool towels), the hotel suggests that guests go and purchase a bottle of water from a local shop, which can then be refilled at the tap by the bar. This still means plastic waste, which really doesn’t make sense in the light of Riu’s environmental policy. • The restaurants are not open as long as restaurants in other Riu hotels I’ve visited. This felt restricting. There was food available for late arrivals and early leavers, but this was very basic and not particularly appetising. There didn’t seem to be 24-hour food for regular guests. • My main gripe, though, is around the all-inclusive beverage offer. All-inclusive alcohol is only available in the restaurants at lunch and dinner – and this is just beer or wine, limited to three drinks per guest per meal. You cannot take your drink out of the restaurant. The bars were all selling alcoholic drinks, so they were permitted, but not included - this is definitely not what I understand all-inclusive to mean, though it looked like loads of guests were happy to pay. Even some more premium non-alcoholic drinks, including some coffees, were charged for. There was some daytime and evening entertainment in the hotel, but much less than I’ve experienced in other Riu hotels. There are no shows, but most evenings there’s either a singer in the outdoor theatre (which can be heard from balconies across the site) or an activity like bingo. We didn’t use the gym, but it looked good. Playa del Palma is about 30 minutes by bus from the main historical centre of Palma – the airport sits between the old city and the beach resort. The buses were easy to navigate for a visit into the old city. We also hired a car to enable us to explore further afield. Parking at the hotel is in a basement car park with lots of space (though they say subject to availability) and costs 10 euros a day. Free on road parking is also available nearby, though not so secure. In summary, we enjoyed our stay here, but would probably not return just on the basis of wanting to stay at the hotel again. However, if we needed to be near Palma again, we would definitely consider one of the Riu properties.
