1st and last time
I wasn't going to leave a review, but people need to know this if you arrive early. I arrived at 720 am, after being on the red eye. I was told my room wasn't ready, ok no problem since check in time is at 3. Then I was told, if you wait until 11 you can use the common grounds, if you don't want to wait, you have to pay $ 28, mind you I was on the red eye, flew all night and I was hungry and tired, so I paid the $28. This policy is absolutely ridiculous! I have been to many all inclusive resorts and never had to pay to use common grounds, especially when I paid to stay at their resort for 1 week with my travel package! It's BS! Even my travel agent never heard of this! And when I finally got to my room my mini refrigerator was not stocked. Moving on to the buffet food, it's absolutely horrible! The area itself is small, there isn't much of a variety. There's also a snack shack by the main pool which again, no variety and the food is repeated daily. The hotel itself is on a hill, so be prepared to walk alot, 1 good thing, they have shuttles to drive you around . The only good thing I can honestly say about this place is, my king size bed was very comfortable along with the pillows. Final thought, this was my experience. Would I ever come back, No. Would I recommend this place, again no.

Beautiful place with so much to enjoy!
We stayed at this resort for 9 days and we could have easily stayed for another 9! This resort is so beautiful and well kept with amazing views. The staff are all very friendly, helpful and always smiling. The beach was nice, we went for walks every day at low tide. It was fun exploring the nearby beaches by hiking & kayaking. There was always something to do during the day with the entertainment crew - target practice with a box & arrow was a first! Very cool. We enjoyed the kareoke & disco every night. Some nights were busier than others but we got some singing and dancing in which was a win for us. We also enjoyed the live entertainment in the evenings before the disco opened - some very talented musicians! My only suggestion is to turn off the lobby music during their performances - it was often distracting. We spent a good portion of our afternoons at the lower level pool with the swim up bar. It was nice to have a place to sit and relax in the pool (for the hubby) or to dance to the music (for me) haha. Special shout out to Oscar - he makes the best drinks and was very friendly, he event taught us a few more words in Spanish! Gracias, mi amigo :) The wildlife at the resort is worth noting - we absolutely LOVED the monkeys by the snack bar! They also had the cutest (and friendliest) racoons. We got to see many iguanas and neat birds as well. The food was really good - the buffet, a la cartes & room service were all fantastic. The snack bar had the BEST nacho cheese! Highly recommend. There was also lots to do off the resort. We took an uber to a nearby beach and shopped around - we felt very comfortable and safe. We also booked a rainforest excursion with JJ which was a really cool experience. JC at the front desk was very helpful with picking out the right trip for us and was very informative and answered all of our questions. JJ was the most amazing tour guide! Always so upbeat and took lots of pictures and videos for us and told many interesting stories and shared lots of facts about Costa Rica which we loved! He certainly made it a day to remember. We also booked a sunset cruise with Miranda on the beach. That was another fun little trip - snorkeling, boat ride, sunset, dolphins, drinks, snacks - all good! The weather we had was absolutely perfect - it was VERY hot and dry - just the way we like it! It made the pools and ocean very enjoyable. We found the resort had a nice amount of A/C - just enough to keep it comfortable in a few of the main areas but not so much that we were cold (exception was the premium lounge - it was a bit too chilly in there for me). Loved the "outdoor" main lobby area and snack bar. It's nice to have places to sit and enjoy the heat without A/C. Overall this was a fabulous little resort and we would love to come back. Pura Vida!

Too Mountainous
If you are an avid hiker you will like all the steep hills you have to walk up and down to get anywhere. This is not a 5 star, I would give it a 3.5 star. Rooms are clean, food is good at the Grill. smallest buffet I ever saw and you have to wait to be seated each time, making wait times.

Disappointing for sure!
Here is my Review regarding the location of this resort : One of the best parts about staying at Occidental Papagayo is how close it is to the airport. The transfer took only about 30 minutes, which made arrival and departure super easy. Our transfer was included in the package, so the whole process was smooth and stress‑free. It’s a great location if you want to start relaxing quickly without a long drive. Atmosphere : The atmosphere at the resort can be a bit noisy at times. Local residents often come to enjoy the beach area and some bring very large speakers, which can turn parts of the resort into a party zone. If you’re looking for quiet relaxation, the noise can be noticeable, especially on weekends. It’s still a beautiful setting, but definitely something to be aware of if you prefer a more peaceful vibe. Rooms and Beds : The rooms at this resort are quite dated and really need some updating. In our case, the first room we were given wasn’t properly cleaned, and we ended up having to move. Even in the second room, there were areas that still felt dirty or overlooked. The beds in both rooms were very uncomfortable, which made it hard to get a good night’s sleep. Another issue was the mini‑fridge — it wasn’t stocked during our stay, even though it was supposed to be. We had to call every day to get it refilled, which became frustrating. If you’re considering upgrading to the Premium Level, it may not be worth the extra cost based on our experience, so it’s something to think about. Food and Service : The resort offers a main buffet along with a few restaurants, but depending on where your room is located, getting to them can involve a very hilly walk. The snack bar by the main pool is convenient, but the options are quite repetitive — mostly chicken wings, fries, pizza, and a few salads. It’s fine for a quick bite, just not very varied. The main buffet, located at the top of a long staircase, is the primary spot for breakfast. The food itself was flavorful and tasty, but the selection didn’t change much from day to day, which made it feel repetitive over the course of the stay. Overall, the food quality was good, but the variety could definitely be improved. Service Review: The service at this resort was mediocre at best. One thing I noticed during our stay was that not a single guest seemed to tip openly — I’m not sure if people tip quietly or if tipping just isn’t common here. We still left tips regardless of the service, but overall this area definitely needs improvement. We also had a frustrating experience with the Premium Level. Instead of helping us directly, staff kept sending us back and forth — from the premium area, down the long staircase to the front desk, and then back up again — just to book the à la carts. After a couple of attempts, we simply gave up. There were a few friendly smiles along the way, but the overall level of service really needs attention. Amenities : The amenities at this resort did not match the reviews I had read before booking. Many of the posts in the Facebook groups rave about the resort being above and beyond, but after staying here myself, I can say that not all of those reviews reflect the reality. The amenities are just okay, and several areas feel outdated or overstated compared to what’s advertised. It really seems like one of those places you have to experience for yourself to know whether it’s right for you. All I can do is share my honest experience, and for me, the amenities fell short of expectations. I’m sure once this review is posted, the hotel will reply with the usual “thank you for staying with us, sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay,” but it would be nice to see management actually address and fix the issues instead of repeating the same standard response. Value : In terms of value, I would rate the Occidental Papagayo as a 3‑star resort at best. Advertising it as a 4‑ or 5‑star property feels like a big stretch based on my experience. The overall quality, upkeep, and consistency just don’t match what you would expect from a higher‑rated resort. This hotel is also not ideal for anyone with mobility issues. Even though shuttles run throughout the property, the steep hills and uneven pathways make getting around difficult — and even getting into the shuttle itself could be challenging for seniors or anyone with mobility concerns. The buildings are spread out across the hillside, and the lighting on the walkways at night is very poor, which doesn’t feel safe for walking alone. Overall, the value simply isn’t there compared to what is advertised. There are some nice aspects to the property, but the experience didn’t match the expectations set by the star rating or the promotional material. My honest opinion of this resort is poor, and I would not return based on several reasons. One of the biggest issues is the atmosphere around the main pool. Guests are allowed to bring their own large, loud speakers and blast music that doesn’t match the resort’s recreation program or the shared environment. It feels disrespectful when everyone has paid for a vacation and is trying to enjoy the same space. I bring a small speaker on trips too, but mine fits in my pocket — not a suitcase. There’s a big difference between enjoying your own music and taking over a public area. For me, the combination of the loud pool environment and the lack of food variety made the stay feel disappointing. The resort is also extremely hilly with many stairs, which makes it challenging for anyone with mobility issues. Even with shuttles running, getting in and out of them can be difficult for seniors or anyone with physical limitations. The Premium upgrade didn’t feel worth the extra cost either. At the end of the day, it’s your choice whether this resort is right for you. I’m simply sharing my honest experience. Based on everything I encountered, I personally would not return.
