May 18, 2026Great hotel , great area - some issues - but overall worth the trip
Traveling from the US is difficult , you need to fly into Santo Domingo and then travel 3 hrs by car. It is worth it if you like outdoor activities - like hiking , waterfalls, national parks , boat excursions. I used Amstar online to book the airport pickup / return and it was seamless !!! they were amazing with keeping me updated on pick up and return. I also booked excursions online and at the hotel lobby (Samuel is the best!).. I would recommend the waterfall trip. i didn't do the horseback ride and chose to Hike it. The hotel: extremely busy - but nothing that interfered with any activities. You need to get out early to get a lounge on the beach or pool. Volleyball was great and the entertainment committee were friendly and energetic. Buffet was good - large variety to choose from. I ate at the French Restaurant, Greek and the Fish Market. All good. Entire Staff was amazing. always had smiles and greeted you like family. Cons - there is an adult pool that people brought their young children = staff didn't say a thing. there is a kids pool ( which looks amazing) and they are also welcome at the large pool by the beach. I travel to get away from kids , don't get me wrong - i love them but to have an adult only area was a nice perk to have. unfortunately I didn't get to enjoy that . Airconditioning in room went out three times, it came back on two of the three. Bathroom smelled very musty/ moldy and when the air conditioning was off - it was at its worst.

Enjoyed our stay
Spent a week here. All in all it was a lovely resort. Ocean was nice and calm. Pools were nice and clean. Food was good. Went to the Brazilian restaurant and enjoyed our meal there. Staff were friendly and helpful. I would return. No complaints at all.

11/10 Experience
Love Gran Bahia Principe El Portillo, great location, beautiful and peaceful beach, great for family and couples. The resort is beautiful, rooms are clean, property is professionally maintained, they are always working so hard cleaning, gardening, entertaining. Staff is exceptional especially the entertaining team, always willing to make us have fun and enjoy all the activities. You will never get bored at the resort, great activities at all times. Special shoutout to BettyBoo, Victor, Rosa and Dj Carlos, thank you for making our stay so joyful. Food was very good at the buffet and the other restaurants we had dinner in. I highly recommend this resort.

Apr 22, 2026Removal towels and personal belongings
I am staying at this resort right now, and the situation with the loungers is unacceptable. Guests wake up before 6 a.m. just to reserve a spot under an umbrella. Then around 8 a.m., an employee walks through the beach and removes towels and even personal belongings from loungers if the guest is not physically sitting there at that moment. People were simply walking, swimming, or having breakfast — not “abandoning” their chairs. If this is really the hotel’s policy, it makes no sense. Are we not allowed to take a short walk or go for a quick swim without losing our seats? The whole system is ridiculous and creates unnecessary stress instead of relaxation.
